This guide covers the main ways to celebrate, the practical details for the night itself and what to book in advance, so you can plan New Year's Eve 2026 without surprises.

Where to celebrate New Year's Eve in Istanbul

1. On the Bosphorus: a New Year's Eve cruise

The most popular way to welcome the new year in Istanbul is on the water. A New Year's Eve cruise sails the city part of the Bosphorus past Dolmabahçe Palace, Ortaköy Mosque and the Bosphorus Bridge, and is in position at midnight to watch the fireworks on both shores. You get dinner, drinks, shows and the countdown in one place, and you avoid the crowds on the streets.

There are two formats. On a shared New Year's Eve dinner cruise you book a table on a large event yacht with a gala dinner, Turkish night shows and a DJ. Our New Year's Eve cruise runs for 5 hours with two-way hotel transfers, from €175 per person. On a private yacht the whole boat is yours, with your own menu, music and programme. See our guide to planning a private yacht for New Year's Eve.

2. A hotel gala dinner

Many large hotels hold a gala night with dinner, live music and a countdown, and some include a room and a late breakfast on 1 January. This is a comfortable choice if you want to avoid travelling after midnight. Hotels on the Bosphorus shore have the best views, and they sell out first.

3. A restaurant on the water

The shoreline from Kuruçeşme to Arnavutköy and Bebek is lined with restaurants and clubs that run set menus on New Year's Eve. Further north, Yeniköy and Tarabya are quieter. Expect a fixed price per person, and reserve weeks ahead for a window table.

4. Street celebrations

Thousands of people gather in Taksim Square and on İstiklal Avenue for the countdown, and big crowds also meet in Kadıköy, Ortaköy and Nişantaşı. The atmosphere is lively, but it is very crowded, police security is heavy and it can get rowdy later in the night. If you go, keep valuables close, agree a meeting point with your group and plan your way home in advance.

5. Concerts and clubs

Concert halls and clubs host New Year's Eve shows with Turkish and international artists. Tickets are sold online through the usual Turkish ticketing platforms and the best shows sell out in December.

Fireworks: where to watch them

At midnight fireworks go up from hotels, venues and boats along both shores of the Bosphorus, and the bridges are lit in changing colours. The display is spread out rather than one single show, which is why the middle of the strait is the best seat in the city: from a yacht you see both shores at once. On land, Ortaköy square, Sarayburnu, the Üsküdar and Salacak shore and the Kadıköy waterfront are the classic spots. We cover each one in our guide to where to watch the New Year's fireworks in Istanbul.

Getting around on 31 December

  • Roads. The coastal road between Beşiktaş, Ortaköy and Bebek is jammed in the evening. Allow plenty of time or use a transfer.
  • Metro and tram. For New Year's Eve 2025, all metro lines ran for 24 hours and the trams and funiculars until 02:00. Check the city's announcement for 2026 in late December.
  • Ferries. City ferries add extra crossings on the night when demand is high, but do not count on a late boat home.
  • Taxis. Taxis are scarce and in demand after midnight. Save your hotel address in Turkish on your phone.
  • Transfers. All our New Year's Eve packages include a two-way transfer from and to your hotel, so you do not have to think about the journey.

Weather and what to wear

Late December in Istanbul is cold and damp, and it feels colder by the water. On a yacht you spend most of the night in a heated saloon and step out on deck for the fireworks, so dress smart and bring a warm coat, a scarf and comfortable shoes with a good grip. Most New Year's Eve parties have a smart-casual or festive dress code.

New Year's Day in Istanbul

1 January is a public holiday and the city wakes up late. Shops in malls and the main sights are mostly open, but some museums and palaces change their hours or close for the day, so check before you go. A calm option is a daytime Bosphorus cruise or a walk through Sultanahmet. See our Istanbul tours for ideas.

Booking tips

  • Book early. New Year's Eve is the busiest night of the year on the Bosphorus. Tables and private yachts are booked from October onwards.
  • Ask what is included. Check the menu, the drinks, the shows, the transfers and the cruise length, and whether there is any service charge.
  • Check the cancellation terms. On our cruises, cancelling at least 7 days before means the advance payment is refunded in full. See our cancellation terms.
  • Book directly. A licensed local operator can answer questions on WhatsApp and adapt the night to your group.
